Sunday Table

For the table laid hours before anyone sits down.

It begins with brightness: bergamot and a glow of saffron, like low sun through the kitchen window. Then the warmth builds. Clove and nutmeg, the spices of something slow in the oven, drift over rose and jasmine from the flowers set out on the table. Underneath runs a soft note of worn leather, like the chair everyone quietly competes for.

Light it before the first guest arrives and let it do the greeting. Long after the plates are cleared, it’s still there in sandalwood, patchouli and moss with a whisper of vanilla. It’s deep, rounded and generous, and fills a room the way a good Sunday does: slowly, then completely.
